When the fabulous Darcie made it known that she was looking for a space in the Cathedral Quarter to host the inaugural Belfast leg of the Global Service Jam, we immediately thought of a place that would be just right for a bunch of people coming together over a weekend to work on ideas, making stuff, and having a beer or two: The Rumble Laboratory.
Having had some previous experience of both the ideas, the making stuff and the beer, we could vouch for the suitability of the space, and after pulling a few strings, ensuring some amazing coffee freshly delivered from Espresso Elements and some extraordinary food supplies from Coppi, the weekend was looking entirely unmissable, even though none of us really knew what a Jam actually was.
Having nothing to do with very busy traffic or fruit preserves, a Jam is actually something akin to musicians coming together to share, experiment, collaborate and improvise on a theme. As the official site has it:
In a spirit of experimentation, innovation, co-operation and friendly competition, teams will have less than 48 hours to develop and prototype completely new services inspired by a shared theme. At the end of the weekend, their collection of brand new services will be published to the world.
The event kicks off on Friday evening at 6pm, and runs through the weekend (with some breaks for rest, we all need our beauty-sleep). The teams will be formed and the brief announced on Friday evening, so be on time. And, most importantly, don't show up unless you've registered here. You'd also be advised to follow the latest updates from @gsjbelfast.
If you're partaking this weekend, see you here.
